Importance of Personal Tutoring

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to teaching. In fact, learning is as unique as the student.

Students can be auditory learners, tactile learners or  visual learners. Some thrive in a classroom environment, while others develop learning skills better in one-on-one situations.

Tutoring can be a simple yet effective addition to any learning curriculum because it can be tailored to each individual student. As a parent or guardian, it is important to find a tutor that can identify your son or daughter’s needs and develop a successful strategy to overcome the difficulties he or she is having with a particular subject.

A successful tutoring strategy will:

  • Increase mastery of academic skills
  • Improve self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Improve students’ attitudes toward school: reduces dropout rates, truancy, and tardiness
  • Provide emotional support and positive role models

Tutoring plays a vital role for juniors and seniors in high school preparing  for college. College and university courses are fast-paced and often leave little wiggle room for students who aren’t well prepared. A lack of preparation can be especially detrimental in college.

A tutor may be a good option for your son or daughter if:

  • He or she needs to learn time management and study skills
  • He or she needs help understanding homework
  • The instructor’s office hours are booked
  • He or she needs help understanding concepts and ideas
  • He or she needs help preparing for a test
  • He or she is falling behind in class
